NKC Women in Business

In advance of American Business Women's Day on September 22nd and National Business Women's Week that will be celebrated the last full week in October, we are celebrating and recognizing our North Kansas City Business Council women business owners, entrepreneurs,  female leaders, and working women making an impact across all sectors of the North Kansas City business community!

According to a recent report by American Express, there are nearly 13 million women-owned businesses in the U.S. This figure represents 42% of all companies in the U.S.  That means women own 4 out of 10 businesses, and these businesses generate about $1.8 trillion annually.

American Business Women's Day

Kansas City’s Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, Frances Stuckey, and Mr. Hilary Bufton Jr., founded the American Business Women’s Association in 1949 to advocate for women’s rights in the workplace. The first sponsored American Business Women’s Day event was held in 1982. This year, American Business Women's Day will be celebrated on September 22, 2022.

national business women's week

The concept of National Business Women’s Week originated with Emma Dot Partridge, Executive Secretary of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs (NFBPWC) from 1924 - 1927.  The first annual observance of National Business Women's Week was held April 15 - 22, 1928 when Lean Madison Phillips, president of the NFBPWC, opened the week with a nationally broadcast speech in which she stated the purpose of the week was "to focus public attention upon a better business woman for a better business world."

In 1932, President Herbert Hoover issued a letter recognizing National Business Women’s Week and the contributions and achievements of working women.

In 1938, the observance was officially recognized and began to be celebrated on an annual basis.  National Business Women’s Week is now celebrated every third week in October and focuses on the accomplishments and success of women business owners, entrepreneurs, and all working women. The annual celebration has helped to promote leadership roles for women and increase opportunities for their advancement professionally and personally.
