Dear North Kansas City Business Council Members,
Good morning! I am sure everyone is counting down to that three day weekend that is just around the corner! Whether you plan to camp out, cook out, head out, chill out, work out, or work (don’t worry -- I’ve been there!), I wish you safe travels, good weather, and quality time with family and friends (or at least a nice paycheck☺). What will I be doing Memorial Day Weekend? I will be at the annual dance recital for one of the studios where I teach – an exciting time for the kids who have worked hard this year perfecting their pliés and pirouettes! We should also all take time to remember and honor the men and women who have died while serving in our military.
But wait! Before you get in long weekend mode, be sure to check out what’s going on in the city and with the business council this week and next! This Wednesday, to coincide with this month’s Business After Hours, the business council will be performing a ribbon cutting ceremony for new member Donut King. Also, this Friday morning is the Farmer’s Market, Saturday is a city-wide garage sale, and next Thursday is our monthly luncheon.
So be sure to read below for more details on Business Council Events and Information and information Straight From… our Members. Last but not least, there might be a hidden treat below…
Have a GREAT week!

May Membership Luncheon
Thursday, May 26 11:30am - 1:00pm
Finnigan's Banquet Venue, 503 E. 18th Avenue, NKC, MO 64116
There's lots going on at the May luncheon! This month's luncheon will feature guest speaker Larry Holley, Head Men's Basketball Coach at William Jewell College. Holley just completed his 32nd year as head coach, has received 14 Coach of the Year Awards, and has been selected to five Halls of Fame! Larry has lots of "sports stories" and will probably explain why William Jewell College is moving from NAIA to NCAA Division II.
The North Kansas City High School Touchdown Club will also be presenting their new Head Football Coach, Leon Douglas. Douglas comes to this position with energy, outstanding values for our youth, and will take the Northtown Hornet Football Team farther than they've ever been!
Finally, the NKCBC will also be presenting scholarships, made possible by the 2011 Mickey Finn Golf Classic, to three outstanding seniors from NKCHS.
Hidden Trivia!
The first person to reply to this email with the correct answer to the following question will win two passes to the Screenland Armour Theater! What is the title of the following poem, and the name of the World War I Colonel who wrote it? In Flanders fields the poppies blow/ Between the crosses, row on row,/ That mark our place; and in the sky/ The larks, still bravely singing, fly./ Scarce heard amid the guns below./ We are the dead. Short days ago/ We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow/ Loved, and were loved, and now we lie/ In Flanders fields./ Take up our quarrel with the foe:/ To you from failing hands we throw/ The torch; be yours to hold it high./ If ye break faith with us who die/ We shall not sleep, though poppies grow/ In Flanders fields.

Future Business Topics Breakfast Forums
We are planning to implement a series of business topic forums – probably as a breakfast program with time for Q&A, or possibly as a "lunch and learn". The first topic we plan to include is “Healthcare Law: What it means for you” featuring an expert on this topic who has made similar presentations before and is dedicated to keeping current with the direction of healthcare legislation.
What other topics are of interest to you? Please let us know which of the following appeals to you the most or if there are other topics you would like to suggest that would be helpful for you and your business.
- Social networking for businesses
- Worker safety, wellness programs and occupational therapy
- Low cost/high yield guerilla marketing
- Others? Please let us know your ideas.
