North Kansas City History

Background/History Virtual Tours NKC Map

In 1883, Willard E. Winner came to the area with visionary plans of building a city and bridge. He built a rock road that became Swift Avenue; he started constructing a bridge across the Missouri River; and purchased land and laid subdivisions in town lots.
When a new city springs up, it usually has its beginning in the congregation of a number of people who create for themselves the habitations, business buildings, traffic ways and other conveniences necessary to urban existence. The city acquires a population first and its structural form later.

Sears Building
In North Kansas City, the industrial giant of Clay County, the order was reversed -- North Kansas City was well planned and built with homes, commercial houses, paved and lighted streets, a water works system and parks in advance of its inhabitants. The district was incorporated on November 4, 1912, as the Town of North Kansas City.

Today, North Kansas City is still a thriving, progressive community where residents, industry, commerce, and government work together for the common good. The vitality of the City is evidenced by new construction of office and industrial space; renovation and re-tenanting of the downtown retail district; new motels, restaurants and entertainment facilities; beautification projects; and, most important, a strong, readily felt community pride. In North Kansas City, the vision lives and grows...because the people, businesses, and the government work at it!
